Our test result for the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (9575)

The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is one of the first 2-in-1 convertibles to be equipped with Intel's "Kaby Lake G" processor. Specifically, it is the i7-8705G quad-core. This combines a powerful Intel Core i7 with an AMD Vega graphics card, which is perfectly suitable for gaming. In terms of performance, this combination works on the level of a Core i7 with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. The big advantage of the combined processor, however, is the space savings. Since the CPU and GPU are combined, much less space is required on the mainboard and the notebooks can be built smaller.

You notice that with the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1. At 9-16 mm, the notebook is very thin for a 15.6-inch device and weighs just 2,000 grams. Thanks to the InfinityEdge display, the external dimensions are also very compact. If you are looking for a lot of performance, a large display but a certain mobility factor, this is the right place for you.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (9575): Performance in the test

The general performance of the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is very high, which is what you can expect from the configuration with the Core i7, the AMD Vega GPU, 16 GB RAM and an NVMe SSD. But how quickly exactly. The SSD comes from Toshiba and achieves the following values:

This is a good result, but not the fastest read and write rates that we have seen in a notebook or convertible so far. After all, the SSD is generously sized at 512 GB. However, from time to time we noticed that unzipping ZIP files takes an unnecessarily long time. We couldn't exactly identify the reason for this.

To test the graphics card, we not only installed and played Battlefield 1, but also ran 3DMark and Cinebench R15. Unfortunately, Battlefield 1 cannot be played in the native 4K resolution on the Dell XPS 15. You have to reduce the resolution to Full HD and lower the details. Then the game runs reasonably smoothly, but doesn't look that great anymore. In addition, the notebook gets very warm - which is normal with such a load. The temperatures are not critical.

If you need more power, you can connect an external graphics card. Two of the four USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 3. Now we come to the benchmarks.

The notebook achieved the following value in 3DMark:

We achieved the following values in Cinebench R15:

And finally, PCMark 8:

Curiously, the Vega GPU was not recognized in PCMark. It is quite possible that the combined processor is simply too new.

The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (9575) has two major disadvantages

The compact design also has disadvantages. The cooling seems a bit undersized to us. The flat case probably didn't allow any more. You can currently clearly notice these high outside temperatures. The notebook gets noticeably warm even under medium load and partly emits this heat downwards. Working on your lap and wearing shorts? That does not work. The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (9575) gets too warm.

The second drawback concerns the keyboard. Dell has developed a new "MagLev Keyboard" for the XPS 15 2-in-1. The keys float in the air like a magnetic levitation train and are held in position by magnets. This made it possible to reduce the hub again. Even after two weeks we couldn't get used to the keyboard. It lacks travel and the keys are much too flat and have no noticeable profile. Very often you hit the wrong keys. The space bar is also far too difficult to press if you only hit the left or right side and not exactly the middle. Overall, the volume when typing is also unnaturally high. Other manufacturers can do that better.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (9575): Dongle-Life

The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (9575) relies fully on the new USB Type-C standard and has four such connections on board. Two normal USB-C ports on the left and Thunderbolt 3 on the right. One or more monitors, for example, or an external graphics card can be connected to them. A USB-C to USB-A cable is included in the scope of delivery. You have to get an HDMI adapter yourself - or buy a USB-C monitor. There are now plenty of USB-C adapters on offer at low prices.
