SIM lock:

A sim lock, network-lock, carrier-lock, IMEI-Lock or (MASTER) subsidy lock is really a technical limit built into CDMA and GSM cell phones by producers for use by service providers to limit the usage of these phones to specific countries and/or networks. This is in comparison with a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not enforce any SIM restrictions.

Unlocking Technology:

Normally, a locked handset will display a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting the unlock code. On the latest phone models working on Android mobile phone software, the cellphone will show a message stating “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it's network locked. Windows phones will display the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Alternative devices may display alternative messages that include "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some instances the phone may simply present a message stating that it is locked. After a valid code is entered, the mobile phone will display "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

The primary reason to unlock a phone is usually to be able to use it with another type of SIM card. Consumers may wish to keep on using their phone but with a new service provider or when traveling in another country they might like to connect to a international network using a pre-paid subscription.

Unlocking Services:

A few businesses provide a unlocking service . This service needs individuals that need to unlock a mobile phone to provide their IMEI number to a service supplier and quite often they will also request the country and service provider the phone is locked to, often sent via email or entered on their web site. The company will then provide (for a fee) a unlock code for the handset.
