Finding light in the darkness is something we can relate to -- whether it be as straightforward as discovering the remedy to some small mystery or as grand an idea as searching for one's purpose in life. The previous Campfire addresses the ends of the spectrum and does this throughout with charm, smarts, and elegance. Hello Games' short-ish adventure hits the mark with cleverly designed puzzles, eye-catching style, plus a touching story that left me feeling anything but forlorn.Forlorns, within this universe, are lost souls scattered around the vibrant land of the final Campfire; they have seemingly abandoned all hope and feel nostalgic of a purpose. By lighting campfires along the way you're helping direct the Forlorns on their travel and allowing them to follow in your footsteps. Granted, you never quite know where these footsteps will require them, but simply revealing the Forlorns that they exist, you let them understand there is always light worth discovering in the darkness. It turned out to be a very clear and ultimately highly rewarding travel as I became increasingly invested in the world and the creatures calling it home.
Progress is made through solving always enjoyable puzzles that virtually always hit that sweet spot of not being so simple that they're dull but being challenging enough to satisfy upon solving, without becoming so complex that it compels groans. Special items and book mechanics are introduced during which forbid the puzzles from becoming overly repetitive, and while there possibly is not quite the level of variation you'd expect over its seven or six hours, it never fails to provide up something new before it reaches a point of becoming rancid.
